Viewpoint I

The Church teaches that every spiritual soul is created immediately by God. It is not “produced” by the parents. The soul is immortal. The term “immediate” can only have meaning within the idea of time. What does immediate mean to God, who is eternal?

When God created our universe He created time with all the antecedents of life.

God is infinite. He is both immediate (here now) and eternal.

In our Profession of Faith…
We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is seen and unseen.
We would have difficulty placing “all that is seen and unseen” in infinity. What is seen is finite, what is unseen in creation is indeterminate. It is only imagined. It can be understood by having “faith” that the “things” that are unseen do exist since what has already been created only have to be discovered.

Similarly, it may be inferred with the same faith, by transcending human objectification, what is unseen can be known by human perspicacity (i.e. a combination of instinct and free imagination through a channel called grace) rather than by scientific hypothesis.

A believer may no more disparage scientific hypotheses than a nonbeliever deny human perspicacity. Both Science and Religion place trust. One in an absolute, the other in The Absolute.

For nonbelievers, proof lies somewhere in a subatomic world extrapolated by science to cosmic proportions, such as worm holes, strings, etc. For believers proof is in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, extrapolated by theology to cosmic Christology – since he was seen after his crucifixion.

Both inevitably point to the unseen, uncreated Deity for whom worship is mandated, and by whom the natural law and the moral law is set in every human being.
